The original Linux \fBgetgid\fP()  and \fBgetegid\fP()  system calls supported
only 16\-bit group IDs.  Subsequently, Linux 2.4 added \fBgetgid32\fP()  and
\fBgetegid32\fP(), supporting 32\-bit IDs.  The glibc \fBgetgid\fP()  and
\fBgetegid\fP()  wrapper functions transparently deal with the variations
across kernel versions.

On Alpha, instead of a pair of \fBgetgid\fP()  and \fBgetegid\fP()  system calls,
a single \fBgetxgid\fP()  system call is provided, which returns a pair of real
and effective GIDs.  The glibc \fBgetgid\fP()  and \fBgetegid\fP()  wrapper
functions transparently deal with this.  See \fBsyscall\fP(2)  for details
regarding register mapping.
